Hard Surface Repair in London, Essex and Kent On-Site Restoration Specialists
What Hard Surface Repair Means in Practice
Hard surface repair is on-site restoration of damaged surfaces — worktops, floors, doors, bathroom sanitaryware, wall panels, and decorative woodwork — carried out at the property without removing or replacing the item. The damage is repaired where it is, using colour matching, filling, finishing, and specialist coatings appropriate to the material.

Most surface damage that looks expensive to fix does not require replacement. A chipped granite worktop, a scratched laminate floor, a damaged bath, a marked door — in the majority of cases these can be restored to a clean, presentable condition on site in a single visit. The cost is a fraction of replacement, and the disruption to the property is minimal.

How On-Site Surface Repair Works
The process is the same across all surface types, though the specific materials and techniques vary by material and damage.

Assessment First
Every job starts with an assessment — either from photos sent in advance or on site at the start of the visit. We identify the material, the damage type, and the appropriate repair approach. We also confirm what the repair will realistically achieve. If a repair is not going to give a useful result for a particular job, we say so before starting.

Preparation
The damaged area is cleaned, stabilised and prepared before any filling or colour work begins. Preparation determines how well the repair holds and how cleanly the colour blends. Contamination, wax, or residue in the repair area will compromise adhesion regardless of the material.

Filling and Levelling
Missing material is rebuilt using the appropriate filler for the surface — hard wax, resin filler, or epoxy depending on the material and the depth of the damage. The filled area is levelled flush with the surrounding surface before colour work begins. Any unevenness in the filler shows through the final coat.

Colour Matching and Detail Work
Pigments are mixed by hand to match the colour of the surrounding surface. On wood and wood-effect laminates, grain lines are hand-painted back into the repair area using fine brushes. On stone surfaces, veining and crystalline detail is recreated. On plain surfaces, colour matching is the primary challenge. This stage takes the most time and determines whether the repair blends or stands out.

Finishing
The repair is sealed with a product matched to the material and the sheen level of the surrounding surface. Getting sheen right is as important as getting colour right — a gloss finish on a matt surface will show the repair more clearly than the damage did. We match to the current state of the surface, not to the original specification.

What the Result Achieves
A well-executed surface repair restores the appearance of the damaged area so it reads as clean and undamaged in normal use. In direct light or when examined very closely, a repaired area may still be detectable. We do not claim invisible repairs every time — we aim for repairs that are not visible in the conditions of normal everyday use.

Who We Work With
Homeowners

Homeowners in London, Essex and Kent contact us when surface damage in their property — a chipped worktop, a scratched floor, a marked bathroom — is affecting the appearance of the space and they want it resolved without the cost and disruption of replacement. Most jobs are completed in a single visit with the item staying in place.
Landlords and Letting Agents

Surface damage between tenancies is one of the most consistent sources of repair work we carry out. Chipped worktops, scratched floors, marked doors, and damaged bathroom surfaces are standard end-of-tenancy items that can be repaired at a fraction of replacement cost. We work with landlords and letting agents across London, Essex and Kent, often covering multiple items in the same property in a single visit.
Builders and Main Contractors
Construction snagging is a significant part of our work. Surface damage during the construction phase — to doors, floors, worktops, bathrooms, and panels — is addressed through on-site repair before handover. We hold a current CSCS card, an NVQ in Damage Repair and Resurfacing, and public liability insurance, allowing us to work on managed construction sites across London without issue.
Property Managers and Showrooms
Property management companies commission repair work across their managed portfolios — addressing surface damage in common areas, managed units, and commercial spaces. Kitchen showrooms and furniture showrooms use our repair service to restore display pieces damaged by handling, installation and customer activity.
Social Housing Providers
Social housing developments and regeneration projects generate surface snagging requirements at volume. We work on social housing snagging programmes across London and Essex, coordinating with housing association representatives and site managers for access and sign-off.
Repair or Replace — How to Decide
The honest answer is that most localised surface damage can be repaired. The cases where replacement makes more sense are specific.
-
Replace when: The substrate has failed — chipboard swollen from water, acrylic with structural cracks, a door with a warped or broken core. Surface repair addresses the surface, not the structure.
-
Replace when: The damaged area is very large — more than 20 to 30 centimetres across on a complex-pattern surface. At a certain size, blending becomes increasingly difficult and replacement is more cost-effective.
-
Replace when: The item is at the end of its useful life — a floor uniformly worn across its entire surface, or a bath that has been resurfaced multiple times and is beyond further cosmetic work.
-
Repair in most other cases: Chips, scratches, burns, staining, impact marks, lifting foil, small cracks. These are cosmetic damage to the surface, and cosmetic repair is what we do.
If you are unsure which category your damage falls into, send us photos. We will give you a straight answer.
Areas We Cover
We regularly carry out hard surface repair work in Barking, from chipped kitchen worktops and scratched floors to damaged doors and bathroom surfaces. Many of our jobs here come from rental properties, flats and ongoing building works where fast on-site repair helps avoid costly replacements.
In Canary Wharf we often work in modern apartments and commercial properties where surface damage needs to be repaired cleanly on site. Worktops, floors, doors and bathroom surfaces can usually be restored without removing the original materials.
Canning Town has a mix of new developments and refurbished properties where cosmetic surface damage is common. We repair chipped worktops, scratched flooring, damaged doors and bathroom surfaces directly on site with minimal disruption.
On-site repair to wooden doors, furniture, staircases, frames and decorative woodwork. Colour matching, grain recreation and lacquer finishing. Solid wood and veneer.

Credentials and Working Standards
Magic Restore Ltd has been carrying out on-site surface repair since 2019. All repair work is carried out by CSCS-certified technicians holding an NVQ qualification in Damage Repair and Resurfacing — not a general construction qualification, but a qualification specific to the work we do.
We hold public liability insurance. Documentation is available on request for managed buildings, commercial properties, and construction sites. We do not subcontract — the technician who attends your property is the one carrying out the repair, using their own materials and equipment.
We assess honestly. If a repair will not achieve a useful result for a specific job, we say so before starting. Our aim is to carry out repairs that hold and look right in normal use, and to be straightforward when replacement is the more appropriate answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hard surface repair?

Hard surface repair is the on-site restoration of damaged surfaces — worktops, floors, doors, bathroom sanitaryware, wall panels, tiles, and decorative woodwork — using colour matching, filling, specialist coatings, and finishing techniques. The item stays in place. The damage is repaired where it is, without replacement.

How do I know if my damage can be repaired?

Send us photos. We assess from photos in the majority of cases and give you a clear answer about what is achievable and at what cost. The main factors are the type of surface, the type and extent of the damage, and whether the substrate beneath the surface is stable. If we need to see the damage in person before confirming the approach, we will say so.

Do you work in occupied properties?

Yes. The majority of our residential work is in occupied homes and flats. We work with dust sheets, protect surrounding surfaces, and minimise disruption throughout. Bathroom resurfacing requires the bathroom to be out of use for 4 to 7 days while the ceramic coating cures — we advise on this when bathroom work is discussed.

Are you insured and accredited for construction sites?

Yes. We hold a current CSCS card, an NVQ qualification in Damage Repair and Resurfacing, and public liability insurance. All documentation can be provided to site managers and main contractors prior to attendance.

Do you cover Essex and Kent as well as London?

Yes. We are based in Barking and cover London, Essex and Kent for all surface repair services. Essex coverage includes Grays, Basildon, Chelmsford and surrounding areas. Kent coverage depends on the project — contact us with your location and we will confirm.

How long does a typical repair take?

Most repairs take between two and five hours on site depending on the surface type, the damage, and the complexity of the colour and pattern work required. Bathroom resurfacing and larger spraying jobs take longer. We give realistic time estimates once we have seen photos of the damage.

What is the difference between repair and resurfacing?

Repair addresses localised damage — a chip, a scratch, a crack — in a specific area of the surface. Resurfacing covers the entire surface with a fresh coat, addressing widespread wear, discolouration, or accumulated damage across the whole item. For bathroom sanitaryware, resurfacing uses specialist ceramic coatings with a 4 to 7 day cure period. We recommend the approach that is appropriate to the specific condition of the surface.

Do you offer a guarantee on repairs?

We stand behind our work. A repair carried out correctly on a stable substrate, with proper preparation and appropriate materials, will hold in normal use. We do not offer a time-limited guarantee as a marketing tool — what we offer is an honest assessment before starting and workmanship that holds in practice. If a repair fails due to our workmanship rather than a change in conditions at the property, we address it.
